The most important thing to consider when booking a cruise is destination. Do you want to cruise the western Mediterranean, taking in countries such as France, Italy and Spain or travel out to the eastern Mediterranean and sample the delights of Turkey and Greece?

There is more than one way to book a cruise and it is well worth exploring every option before finalising a booking.

Some of the best deals can be found online, particularly if you have left it late to make a booking. Alternatively, if you have a preferred cruise line it may be worth contacting them directly and enquiring if they have any special rates if you are travelling alone, as a family or are an elderly holidaymaker.

Finally, you may also want to try the time honoured approach of visiting a travel agent in person and negotiating a deal that way. However, it is worth remembering that, whatever approach you take, you ensure that you are getting the right deal for you and one that meets you needs. For instance, the cheapest package available may not include meals and so may end up costing more in the long run!

However, you also need to be aware that cruise lines have a period when additional savings can be made. January to March is known as "wave period" and is a time when cruise lines offer their best deals in a bid to entice holidaymakers into committing to cruises for the year ahead.
