London's Heathrow Airport is an Amazing Place

by Scott Kuttner (13 February 2010)

London's Heathrow is the largest airport in the United Kingdom and with five terminals; it handles more international travelers than any other airport on the planet. Heathrow can also boast that it is the second largest airport in terms of total traffic of passengers. (In 2009, just behind Atlanta International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson)

British Airports Authority or BAA Limited owns and operates London's Heathrow Airport. BAA is highly regarded as the best transport company in the world. Heathrow handles a staggering 70 million passengers a year. That would average out to about eight thousand passengers an hour. Obviously there are times when there are much less and also times when there are much more.

To live up to this amazing responsibility and handle that kind of tremendous traffic, London's Heathrow airport employs 70,000 people. Thirty thousand of these employees live in the communities around the airport. This makes Heathrow International Airport the largest employer in a single-site in the whole of the United Kingdom. This employment structure in itself is an incredibly complex task.

BAA Heathrow uses a unique and intelligent process to ensure future employees by providing local schools with a resource pack that gives schoolchildren a glimpse of what working in one of the worlds busiest airports is like. London's Heathrow Airport pays its employees well and offers excellent benefits. Many of the children who become aware of this model through the resource pack will have a great option as they enter into the workforce. This unique recruitment style would be well served if other communities notice the idea.

When one thinks about the enormity of running a major airport like London's Heathrow Airport, other questions come to mind. Imagine the vast amount of baggage that comes through the airport and the advanced systems that must be in place to handle it. Another aspect to consider is the security of such a vulnerable resource. The fascinating and complicated business of London's Heathrow Airport security is an extremely complex and professional undertaking.

Another often-overlooked challenge of running an airport is transportation to and from passenger's destinations. London's Black Cabs are an option at London's Heathrow Airport however; these cabs do not offer much in the way of luggage space. It is recommended by the Black Cab Company that three passengers with a total of three full sized suitcases would be their limit. With London's Heathrow Airport being the busiest in the world, it is always a good idea to be prepared. Have your transportation taken care of before you arrive by visiting this heathrow taxi company. This unique service will allow you to book in advance your transportation to and from the airport and the service you receive is the very best the industry has to offer.

London's Heathrow Airport is also famous for its fine restaurants and shops. You can get anything from a hot dog to fine cuisine and even sushi. There are relaxed dining facilities in all five terminals. If you have to be stuck in an airport for any length of time, London's Heathrow Airport is the place to be.
